After a long and careful phase dedicated to the in-depth study of the environmental protection issue related to the overflight of the Magadino Bolle, the project, which has been in preparation since 1999, concerning the operational infrastructure is proceeding.

1987

The Cantonal Air Traffic Concept is born, with which the State Council adopts the principle of complementary development of Ticino's two main airports, giving priority to Lugano-Agno for scheduled commercial and business traffic, and Locarno for general, military, business aviation and seasonal (charter) traffic.

1980

The State Council decides to allow the City of Lugano's initiative to start with scheduled flights, promoted by the new Swiss regional airline Crossair.

1968/69

On March 21, 1968, the State Council transmits to the Grand Council a project for the renovation of the Cantonal Airport, a project accepted on February 10, 1969.
An appeal supported by 6,856 signatures is filed against this decision, resulting in a popular vote on May 20, 1969 (Referendum against the first stage construction credits): 12,548 votes against and 7,959 in favor.
Following the popular rejection, the federal government took over from the canton: in the early 1970s, the technical needs of military aviation prompted the federal government to build a paved runway 800 meters long in Locarno-Magadino.

1955

The Grand Council decides to purchase the land on which early aviation activities had developed in the Piano di Magadino for the purpose of building the Cantonal Airport.

1940

During World War II-which involved France and Nazi Germany preventing flights north, west and within the country, Swissair moved its headquarters and staff to Locarno. With Italy's entry into the war on June 10, 1940, civil aviation came to a complete stop until the end of hostilities in 1945.

On March 25, 1937, authorization arrives from the federal government for the Class III Locarno-Magadino Customs Airport.

1935

To add substance to their arguments in favor of Locarno, they founded the Locarno Section of the Swiss Aero Club on January 25, which on July 1 of that year sent the report International Airport of Canton Ticino in Locarno-Magadino to the Grand Council.

1934

Twenty-two years later, the State Council of Canton Ticino proposed to the Grand Council the construction of a customs airport in Giubiasco, but the Locarnese people-led by engineer Italo Marazza-opposed, deeming the Locarnese more suitable for air traffic.

1912

It is an April day when Ticino-born Enrico Cobbioni's single-engine Caproni from Somma Lombardo arrives for the first time at Saleggi. Flying over Lake Maggiore in 42 minutes and 44 seconds, Cobbioni kicks off the Canton's first Aviation Days.
